At Observatory The Opticians we are pleased to announce the arrival of the optomap® Retinal Exam. This previously unavailable medical technology allows us to view up to the edges of the retina. This ultra-wide view allows us to confidently confirm your retinal health, or discover signs of disease such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and cancer.

optomap-imageThe optomap® takes just minutes to perform. We are able to view the results with you immediately. It is particularly helpful when you return for your routine exam as it provides a permanent record of the condition of your retina. We will compare each year’s optomap® image side by side to discover even subtle changes and monitor your continuing eye health. Early detection of retinal disorders is critical to preventing serious progression and loss of vision. The optomap® exam is completely pain-free, with no lingering side effects; unlike conventional retinal cameras we don’t have to put drops in your eyes which sting and prevent you from driving for some time afterwards.

The optomap® story

In 1990, 5 year old Leif Anderson went blind in one eye due to an undiagnosed retinal detachment. He was getting regular eye exams, but conventional tests available at the time made a thorough examination difficult. Distressed by the diagnostic methods available, Leif’s father, Douglas, designed the optomap® retinal exam.
